Desde Dentro#5

24” x 17” x 19”h

Desde dentro means “from within”.  I chose that title after seeing it as the title of a piece of sculpture at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and thinking “my sculpture is more about “within” than this is”.  This piece is also from the three-legged basket series, but it is more about the connections between one part and another.  I was imagining particularly what it would look and feel like if one was small and could travel around the form on the inside, sliding from one part to another as if on a roller coaster.  The connections around and through each other and the main volumes of the form are the important aspects of the piece to me. Sometimes the connectors break through the wall and then continue out the other side or off in a new direction.  It is important that all the parts have logical but not predictable connections and that no parts start and stop arbitrarily.  Movement through the form is always of primary importance.

The construction is a combination of thrown and hand built parts integrated into a unified structure.  The materials are earthenware clay and layered dry low fire glazes fired in an electric kiln.
