Calling Out

17” x 15” x 22’h

Calling Out is a sculpture about the separation and integration of volumes.  They are separate in some sense, but calling out to each other and intertwining as if being drawn into a relationship or a conversation.  This work is a development from a series of “conversation pods” in which individual forms are connected and relate to one another by means of imaginary conversations.  Abstract organic forms are in this way experienced anthropomorphically as being able to hold conversations in the way that form relates to form.  In all my sculptural “vessels” it is important to me that there is movement  which draws the eye of the viewer through the piece in unexpected ways and creates different “views” of juxtapositions of parts of the form in relation to other parts. This piece was constructed from thrown and handbuilt parts combined to make a structurally integrated whole.  The materials are earthenware and lowfire crawl glazes fired in moderate reduction in a gas kiln.
